“The Predator” – Another Reboot?

I’ve tried giving the whole reboot thing a chance, over and over. But, I have to admit that I have yet to see one that’s really that impressive. To be frank, I think it’s a general mistake for filmmakers or storytellers of any kind to rely on such a vehicle to provide entertainment. Sequels are a little different I think and seem to provide a more sensible path to continue a franchise. That said, this trailer feels like a reboot and I think that’s what director Shane Black (who was in the original Predator 1987 with Arnold) is really aiming for. Well, according to the wikipedia article, the goal seems to be to give us something “unexpected and utterly fresh”. I certainly hope so.

The premise of the film is that a young boy somehow accidentally triggers the Predators to return to Earth and the only thing standing in their way of dominance is a crew of former soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher determined to stop them before folks get wiped out. Doesn’t sound like too complex of a plot and in order to make it “fresh” the production team have to definitely add a detail about the Predators that we haven’t seen. One thing we could probably stand to see is what their true motivation is for being such relentless galactic hunters. Maybe we can see the inner workings more like we got a glimpse of in the last film, Predators, where we find out the Predators have a caste system with the lower class citizens starting to show signs of discontent. I don’t know. I mean, more of the same could be good if it’s a well written story as I always say, but they’ll definitely have to shake things up. So, the trailer seemed action packed and well directed with nothing we haven’t really seen before. Perhaps the saving grace upon viewing was the presence of Olivia Munn who I’m still waiting to receive her true breakout role (she needs to kick some serious butt in the next X-Men movie…IJS). Anyway, enjoy the trailer and let me know what you think below in the comments.
